Sketchbook - Sable Antelope

I went on a sketching excursion to the California Academy of Sciences this Saturday, and spent some time drawing in the hall of African animals. There are so many amazing exhibits between the aquarium, Amazon Rainforest dome, and natural history displays, but this muscular Sable Antelope caught my eye this time around. One of my favorite places in San Francisco, I fully plan on making better use of my membership!

Friday

The Circle

Here is the last assignment I completed before leaving the atelier. Special thanks to Carl Dobsky, Mike Bierek, and Christian MacNevin for teaching the Illustration class!

Thursday

Digital Still Life - Tea Pots

Here are some more quick studies of a couple of the teapots I have around my apartment. I guess you could say I collect them. Painting these reminded me of one of the last things I did for James Kei's digital painting class back at the atelier. We were assigned to paint the corner of a room, so I decided to paint a little part of my kitchen. Since the study features yet another of my green teapots, I thought I'd throw it in at the end of this post.

Wednesday

Cast Paintings

Here are the Cast Paintings I did at the Safehouse Atelier. Each one is oil on wood panel, 16x20 inches.

Tuesday

Dungeon Delve

This was done for the Dungeon Delve Challenge over at The Art Order blog. The competition was huge, with hundreds of entries submitted! I had a lot of fun making this piece, and definitely learned a lot from the experience. I can't wait for the next one!

Monday

Sketchbook - Emeryville Marina

The weather finally let up a bit this weekend, so I decided to take my sketchbook out to the beautiful Emeryville Marina. The clouds were still pretty ominous and the wind strong, so I opted not to take my oil paints, but the colors were so beautiful out there I will definitely be going back.

Friday

Still Life - Horseshoe Crab

Here is a Still Life I painted shortly before leaving the Safehouse atelier. I thought I would post it here to so I could show you guys some of the process behind it. First I did a block in, or rough sketch in graphite, to get the proportions and composition the way I wanted. Then I did a quick oil sketch to get a rough idea of how the colors and values would work together to make the final piece.

Thursday

Digital Studies - Trees

The weather here in the Bay Area had been pretty gray and rainy the past week, so I felt like posting these today. Just some quick studies I did from reference to practice my photoshop painting skills. More to come!

Wednesday

Digital Still Life - Seashells

Here are two digital still lifes I painted. The top one is more recent, and although I still need a lot more practice, I'm pretty happy with how much faster I can paint a still life now than back when I attempted the bottom one. One of the most rewarding things about attending the Safehouse Atelier was the sheer rate of improvement you would see from most of the students! It's hard to see it in yourself until you try to go back and do something you know you struggled with so much to begin with. Expect a lot more of these now that I'm on my own, cause I don't want the progress to stop!

Tuesday

Splashwoman

Here is an illustration I did for the Megaman Redesign Challenge over at CgHub. It was quite the competition, so if you get a chance go check out all the other amazing entries. Can't wait for the next one!

Monday

Cast Drawings

I thought I would start out the traditional posts by uploading my cast drawings! Been a little while since I did these but thought I'd dust them off and add them to the blog.

Banner Art

Having recently finished studying at the Safehouse Atelier, I decided I would start a blog to track my progress now that I'm out on my own. Expect to see updates of new sketches, illustrations, concept art and life studies, as well as the stuff I worked on at art school as I finally get the chance to organize and scan everything.
I'll start out by posting a higher resolution version of the illustration I painted to use as a banner:
Keep an eye out for more posts soon. I hope you enjoy!
