Thursday

Digital Study - Mountains and Clouds 2

Just another environment study using photo reference.

Wednesday

Tuesday Night Portrait Paintings - Set 3

I got around to scanning some more alla prima head paintings and thought I'd post them today. The third portrait also features one of the sweetest little dogs I've ever seen, Chiiwa. He would wander around looking up at all of us timidly during the breaks, and then obediently jump back into his masters lap to pose when the timer went off.

Tuesday

Digital Still Life - Peacock Feathers and Candle

Just a couple more quick digital still lifes. My cat, Faye, wanted to knock over those feathers the entire time I was painting them. I had to keep one eye on my screen and one eye on her to make sure she didn't make off with them before I was done!

Monday

Long Pose Figure Drawing - Jay

Studies of Jay

Here are more gesture drawings, I believe these are all ten minute poses. We had a lot of fun drawing Jay, and as a result, he modeled for us several times. Expect to see him again in future posts.

Friday

Sketchbook - Butterfly and Beetle

This is sort of a preview for an still life I've been working on. I'm hoping that posting up the sketch will motivate me to finish the painting in a timely manner!

Thursday

Digital Studies - Lava Sea

Trying to experiment with this study. I decided to see how it would turn out if I made some major changes from the reference, painting all the water as lava instead. I had some fun with this one, adding lava-falls and lightning to complete the final effect.

Wednesday

Tuesday Night Portrait Paintings - Set 2

Here's another set of alla prima portrait paintings from Coro's night class. I believe the top portrait might have been over two sessions, but the others are three hour poses again.

Tuesday

Digital Still Life - Shrimp Moth

Here's another quick study of a shrimp moth I purchased at one of my favorite stores, the Bone Room, located on Solano Ave in Berkeley. I'm hoping to get a chance to spend the time this guy deserves, painting a still life in oils.

Monday

Long Pose Figure Drawing - Kaytee

Not only was the block in for this pose quite a challenge at this angle, but I also ended up going out of town part way through the pose. Still, I feel like I learned a lot trying to capture her, and hopefully the unfinished result is still worth posting.

Studies of Kaytee

The usual collection of 10 and 20 minute gesture drawings done to explore options for the long pose figure drawing. This time we wanted to try a relaxed seated or reclining pose.

Thursday

Digital Figure Drawing - The Old West

I stopped by for digital figure drawing class today, so I decided to post up my study. Since I had an old one on this laptops hard drive, I thought I may as well add it to the pile. Its been a long time since Kei had his digital figure drawing class and its nice to see something similar starting up again at the Atelier. I have a bunch of studies like this on my external drive from days gone by that will probably make an appearance as I keep sorting through my artwork.

Wednesday

Tuesday Night Portrait Paintings - Set 1

These Alla Prima portraits were done from the model during El Coro's Tuesday night painting class. The model posed for three hours with breaks, trying to hold their expression through constant jokes and questionable music. As these dried, I would pretty much just throw them in a pile, so these are from various points during my time at the atelier, of varying sizes, and on varying surfaces. I still stop by occasionally on Tuesday night to keep practicing and say hello to all my friends. I decided to start sorting through these as well so more to come shortly!

Tuesday

Digital Studies - Snowy Mountains

Just a couple quick studies of snowy landscapes done from photos.

Monday

Long Pose Figure Drawing - Nina

Studies of Nina

Here are the gesture drawings done before deciding on a pose for the long term figure drawing of Nina. Most of these were done in ten minutes, the first two standing poses were twenty minutes long, and the last two were five.

Friday

Digital Still Life - Quick Salt Shaker

Just another quick digital painting, this one done while sitting at the Mixing Bowl, a small coffee shop in my neighborhood.

Thursday

Digital Still Life - More Crab Shells

Here is another quick digital still life of some more specimens from my sea shell collection. Stereotypically enough, I had these hanging on the wall in my bathroom prior to pulling them down and painting them.

Wednesday

Digital Still Life - Frog Statue

I bought this little frog statue from the Himalayan Cultural Fair in Berkeley several months ago, and he's been sitting on my desk, giving me that funny stare, just begging to be painted.

Tuesday

Digital Studies - Oahu

Here are some more beach studies I did from some vacation photos. The first is from Ala Moana beach park, and the second one is Hanauma bay, Oahu.

Monday

Long Pose Figure Drawing - Sonja

I also happened to have a scan of the block in I did for this one, so I thought I'd post it as well

Studies for the Kiersten and Sonja Figure Drawings

These are some preliminary gesture drawings done to explore different options for the long pose figure studies. Each of these drawings was done in about ten minutes.

Friday

Digital Still Life - Ocean Adventure

Things I collected on a trip to the beach this summer.

Thursday

Long Pose Figure Drawings - Lux and Kiersten

Here are the first two long pose figure drawings I did. The first one is a drawing of Lux Rose. I only got to spend about half of the class sessions working on her because I was still finishing up my cast paintings when the pose started. The second model was named Kiersten. I'm going to dig through the piles of drawings I currently have stored under my bed and post up some of the later long pose drawings and paintings, as well as the preliminary gesture drawings and sketches for each one, so stay tuned for more! I'll be busy scanning things for a little bit.
