Tuesday Night Portrait Paintings - Henry Lewis
Here is a more recent head painting. Coro got his friend, Henry Lewis, tattoo artist and painter, to model for us.
Monday
This drawing was done the second time Jay modeled for us. During this pose, he actually ended up saving a small child from a fire! Luckily both he and the child were fine, however he ended up losing his beard. I started the pose by working on his face first, and so my drawing still includes it, however several of us ended up with a very different face study. We were just glad that everything turned out ok for both of them, and it certainly made the collection of drawings more interesting.
I am currently visiting my family for spring break and did not think to bring my gesture drawings to scan ahead of time. I'll post them up as soon as I get hold of them.
Friday
Concept - Stranger Thumbnails Round 2
These are the second set of designs I worked on for this character. We ended up going with the third sketch from this set. I'll post the concept painting up here soon!
Wednesday
Concept - Stranger Thumbnails Round 1
Here are the first set of pencil sketches I did to design Stranger, one of the main characters from the Beastrider concept project. At first our team tried going for a more western influenced style, so many of these ideas explore traditional 'cowboys and indians' elements in their design.
Tuesday
Concept - Beastrider Mount
I was looking through the posts I've made so far and suddenly realized I have yet to post any of my concept designs. I've got some new stuff under works, but I've also been polishing up some of the things done for the concept art projects at the Safehouse Atelier. I decided I may as well start posting those while I work on my portfolio.
This was a creature design I worked on during the Beastrider project; a redesign of the classic movie Easy Rider, set in a fantastical world full of vast landscapes and strange animals. This creature was intended to be the mount owned by a character identified only as 'Stranger', whos design will be appearing here very shortly.
Here are some quick designs for possible saddles, as well as some of the initial pencil thumbnails.
Monday
Long Pose Figure Drawing - Danbi
This drawing was a bit of a challenge because we were also in the middle of moving to another studio at the time. We had to reset up the entire pose in a new location, as well as having others moving furniture and art materials around us a fair amount. It definitely made things more interesting.
Unfortunately I can't seem to find the gesture drawings I did while we were choosing this pose, but if they turn up while I'm going through and scanning things from school, I'll definitely post them up here.
Friday
Women in Dresses
Since I had a couple clothed figure studies in a row, I decided I may as well post these two drawings I had laying around that I did from the costumed model. They are both a bit older now but for some reason I still like some things about them.
Thursday
Digital Figure Drawing - Octopus Dress
Today I stopped by the Safehouse Atelier for digital figure drawing again. We had such a beautiful model, and she made her own incredible costume! I'm jealous I won't be able to stop by for the second session next week!
Wednesday
Some Clothed Gesture Drawings
Here's some gestures I did a little while ago from a costumed model, I believe these are 3 ten minute poses and one twenty.
Tuesday
Block-ins Set 1 - Skeletons
Here are some block-ins I did between cast drawing and painting. Block-ins are an exercise done at the atelier to learn how to quickly and accurately judge proportion and shape. You can learn more about the block in process, as well as see some more student work, over on the Safehouse Atelier Blog. I guess these weren't technically done in a sketchbook, unless you count a 14x17 pad of canson sketch paper. I just wasn't sure what else to file them under. I did plenty more of these, just got to get around to scanning them.
Monday
Studies of Lux
Ten and twenty minute gestures to help find the pose for the long drawing. We spent awhile playing with subtle variations on a reclining pose, only to decide on a pose the model naturally took while on break. Sometimes its these moments that end up being the most beautiful, if perhaps the hardest to capture.
Friday
Digital Study - The Road
"From daydreams on the road there was no waking." - Cormac McCarthy
The last illustration made me want to learn how to paint better skies. Here's another photostudy I did for practice.
Thursday
Tuesday Night Portrait Paintings - Set 4
Here is another set of Alla Prima portrait paintings. Each session was three hours long, the top and bottom paintings were done on gesso board, the middle two, canvas.

Tuesday
Long Pose Figure Drawing - Christine
Another unfinished long pose drawing, this time featuring one of our regular models, Christine. She's an excellent model and a lot of fun to draw.
Monday
Sketchbook - Emeryville Marina 2
The weather was beautiful today, so I slipped out for a bit and went sketching down at the emeryville marina again. Certainly a welcome break from the heavy rain we've had recently.
Friday
Illustration - The Twilight Katana
This is an illustration I finished this week, based on a quick photoshop sketch I did while the Atelier was on hiatus. It feels good to finally see it completed.
